Climbing

One of my chem classmates asked me to teach her how to climb, so I met her at the wall today. It was fun - she and her friend (who has a tiny bit of experience) were super enthusiastic, and they both did things they didn't think they could do. Afterwards, Y told me she thought that she'd only go halfway up the wall and then come down again, but in fact she made it to the top of two runs! Lots of struggling (and begging us to let her quit early), but in the end she prevailed.

The frustrating part was the pace of the whole thing - I climbed a b+, 2 c's, and an a over the course of 2.5 hours. Lots of chatting in between climbs. Still, I did some pretty good work - I finally did the orange 10c in one shot (no falling or resting), which has been a goal of mine for a while.

120 push-ups while I was waiting for Y to get ready.

Ultimate, gurgle, gurgle, ultimate

Went to the weekly Night Train scrimmage, but only played about half the points, and didn't play all that hard. My stomach is still a little funny, and it didn't feel great to sprint. I did do 120 push-ups on the sidelines though!

About an hour after the scrimmage ended, I played in an IM ultimate game. Digestion had settled down by then, and I played most points, but I was just handling against pretty inexperienced women, so still not too much running. We won 10-3 or so. I missed the last game, but I guess we got beaten pretty badly, so everyone was in a good mood with the easy win. There were plenty of drops (breezy, chilly night), but good cuts and good defense.

Push-ups, pull-ups, no throw-up!

Alternating sets of push-ups and pull-ups at the top of every minute, for 10 minutes.
10 sets of 15 push-ups = 150 total
10 sets of 2 pull-ups = 20 total

Notes: I was very sick on Sunday night with food poisoning or some kind of stomach flu. (Poor Scott had it even worse than me.) I'm better today, but definitely not in top form. This was a good, low-key workout that got my blood flowing a little, but not too much. The 20th pull-up was very hard, but the rest felt pretty good!

13 pull-ups

3, 2, 3, then singles, all from a dead hang.

Cindy - another PR!

16 rounds + 5 pull-ups
(Still doing jumping pull-ups.)

Scheduled to do 115 push-ups today, so did 45 extra over the course of the workout.

"Bear" lifts

2 x 12 x CFWU (3 pull-ups, 5 dips)

5 x 5 "Bear" lifts (clean, front squat, push press, back squat, push press)
Warm-up: 45#, 55#, 65#
2 x 5 x 65# (broken sets: 4/1, 4/1)
1 x 5 x 70# (2/2/1)
2 x 5 x 75# (2/2/1, 2/2/1)

6 more pull-ups for a total of 12 today.

Notes
Can't say I'm a fan of this. Maybe I should have stayed at 65# and gone for speedy, unbroken sets? I worked my push press a little, and I realized how rusty my cleans are, but the squats seemed like busy work. Thumbs down on this workout.

Climbing!

44 push-ups

Warmed up on a 10a ("Do Me Now"). Got a few moves into a 10d ("Pink is For Boys"). Had a good time on the red and black 10b. Struggled to get up my favorite orange 10c. Did pretty well on the purple 9 (made more challenging by restricting feet), but still can't finish cleanly. Did a great dyno move in it though!

Goals for next time: finish the orange 10c in one shot. Solid finish on the purple 9.

More push-ups, for a total of 113.

Ultimate

Night Train scrimmage for an hour and a half. Not many subs or water breaks. I was running pretty well. (My legs are finally starting to recover from Sunday's burpees + Monday's sprints.)

11 pull-ups, plus some work on knees-to-elbows. I can almost do one!

Tuesday, April 21, 2009

11 pull-ups

...instead of push-ups.

I also worked on my knees to elbows. I'm close...

Acroyoga!

We learned "shoulder stand on bridge." One person does a bridge, and the other puts his shoulders on her knees, grabs on to her calves and then pushes up in to a shoulder stand. (There's a spotter to help the person on top get his balance.) Surprisingly, it's easier than it sounds. This was only our second class after all.

111 push-ups when I got home.

3 x 200m, 400m, 600m

5 minute jog to the track.

WOD 091418 from CrossFit Endurance
3 rounds of: 200m + 400m + 600m
Rest the exact time it takes you to do each interval in each set. Ex. 200m run in 35 sec, rest 35 sec. Then 400m run, rest 400m time, run 600m, rest 600m time, run 200m, etc.
200m times: 0:45, 0:48, 0:49
400m times: 1:37, 1:43, 1:46
600m times: 2:36, 2:44, 2:45

Notes
Uf da, I think I picked the wrong day to do this! My quads were pretty tight when I woke up this morning (from yesterdays burpees, I assume), and it turns out they were pretty tired as well. My lungs felt alright on this workout, but my legs were heavy, slow, worn out. I'll have to try it again when I'm a little fresher.

It's a good workout though - I might have to prescribe it to my ultimate team...

100 burpees

I did 100 burpees in 8:54 while the team warmed up. (Added 10 more push-ups at the end for the push-up challenge.) Coached 2 games. Good day!

Active rest

No workout, but I got to coach 4 games, so I was on my feet and moving around all day. I was pretty tired by the time I got home.

No push-ups (gasp). I'm thinking of mixing up the push-up challenge by doing pull-ups instead on alternate days. I'm not sure how the progression should work though - I think adding one pull-up every day would be too hard, so maybe 1 every week...? Suggestions?

Anyways, I did 10 pull-ups when I got home.

CrossFit Davis!

Woo hoo! A CrossFit gym just opened in Davis! I went down for my free intro session (aka marketing schpiel) this morning. Everything is shiny and new, and they're still getting equipment in, but it looks like they're off to a good start. Just trying to build a customer base.

Intro workout:
500m row
40 squats
30 sit-ups
20 push-ups
10 pull-ups (I did mine with a giant purple rubber band)

Time: 6:56

Jumping pull-ups would have been faster - probably closer to 6 minutes? I was breathing hard by the end, but it didn't feel like a full workout, so I did 3 more rounds when I got home (minus the rowing, and with jumping pull-ups).

Time: 15:20

17 more push-ups, for a total of 107 today.

Thursday, April 16, 2009

Helen

CFWU x 2 x 10 (4 dips, no pull-ups)

Helen
3 rounds of:
400 m run (10-10.5 mph on the treadmill)
21 swings w/35# dumbbell (14 overhead, 7 eye-level)
5 pull-ups (only 4 on round 2)

Time: 18:30

106 push-ups

Notes
My calves were pretty tight after the 400s. Felt short of breath overall. Alergy season?

Arboretum run with intervals

30-minute run through the arboretum. 6 minute-long intervals, separated by 3.5-minute walk/jog rest intervals.

Hard work. I was slower than usual on the rest intervals - needed more walking time to catch my breath. I've been bad about doing my running workouts lately.

105 push-ups.

Acroyoga!

Scott and I had our first acroyoga class today! It was definitely fun - hard to explain, so maybe I'll bring my camera next time. Not a tough workout... but it's really nice to be able to use my body in such a fun way.

104 push-ups.

Climbing

I didn't climb all that many routes tonight, but I am worn out... in a really good way. As in, it was a little more difficult to do the dishes than usual.

103 push-ups after we finished climbing.

Sunday, April 12, 2009

102 push-ups

And plenty of good Easter brunch food!

Bouldering, dancing, 11th-hour push-ups

Julie took us bouldering in Vacaville in the afternoon! It took me a while to get into it, but I had one really great run - we found a boulder with a big diagonal crack, and I made it all the way up. It was definitely more of a mental challenge than a physical one - the top was pretty high (15-20 feet?) and it got more difficult the higher you went. But I stayed calm (fortified by the knowledge that Scott and Julie were below to catch me) and made it to the top! It felt fantastic. I'm excited to go back again.

Got home at 6:30, was out the door by 6:50 to the "Epsilon Ball" pseudo-prom put on by Scott's department. (Scott and I got to make the dance mix!) We danced, drank and took lots of silly photos and got home a little after 11, when we dutifully did our 101 push-ups.

100 push-ups

Cindy PR!

Cindy: 20 minutes of:
5 pull-ups (jumping)
10 push-ups
15 squats

I finished 15 rounds + 5 pull-ups! I finally feel like push-ups aren't the thing holding me back. (Now it's the pull-ups.)

Pick-up & push-ups & pizza

Pretty scrappy pick-up. I was pretty wrecked from yesterday's deads. My lower back is tight and my shoulders are super tender. I asked Scott for a massage but then made him stop becuase it just hurt.

98 push-ups and then pizza and beer on the field to celebrate someone's birthday!

Linda

CFWU x 2 x 10

Linda
10 --> 1 reps of:
Deadlift: 135# (only 10 --> 6)
Bench press: 65# (75# for last 5 rounds)
Cleans: 70#

Time: 30 minutes

41 push-ups (counting the bench presses as the first 55, for a sort-of total of 96)

Notes: I haven't lifted heavy in a long time, partly because of the New Year's Resolution and I-want-to-wear-a-bikini-for-spring-break crowds in the gym. Time to get back into it though. I went early but was thwarted by a weight-lifting class. Every time I left one of my bars, someone switched out the weights and started using it. Sigh. So I didn't do the last of the deads - probably a good choice, since my lower back is sore enough now as it is.

Fools Fest Day 3

Just 1 game, which we lost on universe point. Darn - it would have been nice to win at least one game this weekend. Heartening that we played so well against a team that beat us 13-4 on the first day though.

95 push-ups

Back to Jess's house for a shower (YAY) before hopping on a 5.5-hour flight back to CA.

Saturday, April 04, 2009

Fools Fest Day 2

Played 3 games, all of which we lost. At least one of them was close! Still pretty windy. I threw it away a bunch. My body felt good - not sore at all from yesterday. I was pretty beat by the last game though.

94 push-ups during our bye.

Fools Fest Day 1

Played 3 *very* windy games. We lost them all, by pretty wide margins. I was making poor decisions, given the conditions - frustrating. I felt pretty good, even though I'd only gotten a few hours of sleep on the red-eye. Some afternoon caffeine probably would have helped my decision making though! Sunny and warm, and I got to see lots of good friends.

93 push-ups after dinner, before my shower.

92 push-ups

Pickup

2-ish hours of pick-up, no subs. I was a mess on defense, and lazy to boot. Felt so-so on offense. Good to throw around, since I'll be playing at Fools Fest this weekend!

91 push-ups afterwards.
