Walking & climbing

Mom, Fred, Scott and I walked along the Lakewalk for 2 miles, met my Dad at Hell's Kitchen for a fantastic breakfast, and then walked 2 miles back. Great weather and really good lemon ricotta pancakes.

In the afternoon, Scott and I went climbing with Fred and our neighbor Jane. We climbed for at least two hours, and I had a great day. It was really fun having my brother there cheering for me, and it was awesome to watch him climb. I'm hoping he can meet us in Tuscon this spring for some outdoor climbing...

Hiking in the snow

Scott and I took Max the dog on a beautiful hike along Tischer Creek. We followed a snowshoe trail right along the creek for much of the way. Lots of fresh, untouched snow on the ground and on branches. Absolutely gorgeous.

Climbing

Scott and I went climbing at the rock gym in Duluth, but we arrived late and didn't have time for many routes. It was fun to climb new surfaces, but I was feeling tired/weak.

We'd scheduled a game of snow ultimate, but only three of us showed up, so we just tossed. Great to be out in the fresh air. Practiced my layouts a little. Snow is so fun!!

Shoveling snow!

We didn't do any other workouts in Florida - Scott killed himself with those burpees and was sore for days afterwards. Today we flew to Minneapolis where my dad picked us up and drove us to Duluth in a snowstorm. We couldn't even get all the way home - we had to park the car at the bottom of the block and walk the last part because it hadn't been plowed and was too steep for our mighty Volvo. After dinner, my dad and my brother and Scott and I all went out to clear the driveway and dig out the car. Uf da. Snow is so fun!

100 Burpees

Scott and I did 100 burpees (poolside burpees even!). He finished in 7 minutes, which made me feel bad about finishing in 13 minutes. But at least I finished 2 minutes faster than last week. Was having a hard time breathing, though, just like yesterday. Ugh.

Any suggestions on other workouts we can do while on vacation? We don't have access to weights or a pull-up bar. We can do combinations of: running, squats, push-ups, sit-ups and burpees. And we have a pool - too small to do laps, but maybe there's something we could do.

Sprint Tabata

We spent all day yesterday on planes, going from California to Scott's parents' house in Florida. I was exhausted today... but at least I worked out.

It's only 8:30 p.m. now (only 5:30 in CA), but I'm very ready for bed. Uf da.

Cindy

I really wanted to go climbing today, but the wall was closed. Grrr. Scott and I did Cindy instead - our old standby.

Just like the last time I did this workout (10 days ago), I completed 10 rounds + 15 squats. But this time, all of my push-ups were good ones (full length, nose to the ground). Now I have to start working on doing them with my elbows close to my body.

Arboretum run (with intervals)

Had a really good run today! Scott did the loop, with intervals, yesterday, and finished in about 35 minutes. That motivated me to push myself today. I did seven and a half minute-long intervals, and finished in under 39 minutes. I still had to walk for about 30 seconds after each sprint and felt like my chest was *very* tight, but overall I ran faster during the sprints and during the jogs than in previous weeks. Hooray!

Went climbing with Scott, and had a nice, strong night. I can tackle just about all of the 5.10a routes now, so next time (Sunday, I hope) I'll have to start working on a 10b or two...

Better than putting on a sweater...

I was sitting at my desk, wearing long underwear and fleece and but still feeling chilly. I was not in the mood for yet another cup of tea, so I did 100 burpees instead and got warmed up in a hurry!

Time: 14:50

(I should note, though, that I did not have perfect form on many of my push-ups. It would have taken me a LOT longer had I focused on that. I was surprised at how tired my legs were!)

Weak mash-up work-out...

I went to the gym intending to do the 400m/sumo/thruster WOD, but was foiled when every single treadmill (AND both rowing machines!) were in use. I guess all the students are using them for stress relief. As it turned out, after two rounds of sumos and thrusters, my legs were turning to jelly, so I'm not sure how I would have done on the sprinting anyways. I'll try again tomorrow.

Climbing
I was *beat* on my first run, but recovered enough to have a few good runs after that. Didn't try anything too taxing, and didn't stay long, because my partners had to go study for finals.

Time: A little over 30 minutes

A good, hard workout. The weights were just about right. I could have gone a little heavier on the clean, and maybe on the deadlift, but not much. I'm happy to start modestly and give my body a chance to remember how to do this stuff. My wrists were sore - they need to get stronger too.

I had good form on my cleans for the first few rounds (at least I think so), but they definitely got sloppy towards the end. :-(

Arboretum run

Had a really good run through the arboretum with Scott today! No intervals for me (well, one at the halfway mark), but Scott did six. I think our interval work of late has been working, because we finished the run in 39:13 - a few minutes faster than usual. I felt strong, and I was breathing easier than I have in a while. Yay!

Sprint Tabata (& a little climbing)

Warm-up: Bike ride to the gym + 1/4 mile jog

Sprint tabata!

Another 1/4 mile jog.

Then I climbed with Scott and about 6 of his classmates who were also there. Definitely fun when there's a crowd. Unfortunately, there were a lot of other people there too, and it was kind of hard to find space on the wall. I only did about 4 runs - my muscles were quickly burning out, and the routes I wanted to do were taken. I felt much better about my climbing than on Tuesday, so that's good!

I did the sprinting on the funny little track in the UC Davis gym - it's on the second floor and goes around the basketball courts and the top of the climbing wall, and at one point you're running down a straight section directly towards a big bank of girls on elliptical trainers. Lots of tight curves - ugh. But, it was good for me to do it with other people around, because it pushed me to run harder and "look good." But no one else was tabata-ing with me, so I didn't have to get nervous about competing/winning (which is always the *worst* part about track practices for me).

Enough rambling. It was a good workout. We had spaghetti w/flax from Trader Joe's for dinner. Time to get back to work. Hot tub later!

Cindy

AMRAP in 20 minutes of:
15 squats
10 push-ups
5 pull-ups (jumping)

10 rounds + 15 squats

Last time I did Cindy, I got in 12 rounds, but half of my push-ups were from my knees, but this time I only resorted to them on 2 rounds (the 6th and the 9th, I think), so that feels like an achievement. And my arms are not nearly as drained as they were last time. That was only 2 weeks ago.

Interval running, push-ups

We ran about half of our normal arboretum run today - a little over 2 miles, a little over 23 minutes, 4 intervals (1-minute sprint, 3.5-minute job). Maybe next time I'll experiment with varying amounts of rest times.

Did 50 push-ups (10 sets of 5) when I got home.

Then I showered and went to play dominoes at a friends' house!

Climbing

Went climbing with Scott tonight, but it wasn't pretty. I was disappointed - I did so well last week, but tonight was dismal. I'm proud of my second run - it's a tough 5.9 that I scrambled to the top of last week, but this week I was much more graceful.

Overall, grrr.

Arboretum run (with intervals)

It was beautiful out today - way too nice to spend time in a gym - so Scott and I went running through the Arboretum. The workout was just like my workout on Tuesday, except I had company and my body felt more tired. I did minute-long sprints for the first five rounds and then 30-second sprints for the last two. Finished the loop in 40:45.

It was great to have Scott along - I always feel bad when he's too injured to get out and do things. Unfortunately, his leg seized up about a mile from home, so he had to walk the last part.
